Program Notes to Jon Forshee's Songlines (under construction)

Suppose we were able to re-route sensory data from the cochlea in our ears to our olfactory tract: could we then smell an F-sharp? Or, suppose we re-routed sensory data from somatosensory receptors beneath our skin to chemoreceptors in our tongues: would we enjoy the taste of a caress? Further, suppose we re-routed neural stimulation from our optic nerves to the auditory nerves in our ears: the music of Songlines might be the result of such mental re-wiring.

Songlines is scored for high voice and any 2 string instruments.

Performance of Songlines requires the full score, which consists of:

  • The notated music for the high voice
  • 8 images, (out of 12 possible), downloaded from this site, to be played by the instrumentalists
  • Detailed performance instructions are included in the preface of the notated music for voice. This music may be acquired by emailing to .

Below are 12 links to 12 images.
Contributed by artist Raymond Cross, these images are the sources of the music(s) played by the 2 instrumentalists.
Though the links are listed from 1 to 12, this implies a heirarchy only on this webpage; the images selected for performance are free from all such implications.
To obtain the images for performance use, click on the link, and print the page that appears from your browser. Most browsers have a "printer" icon in the upper toolbar.
The images should be printed from a color printer.
[If a color printer is not available, printed color copies can be obtained by writing to .]
